Book Review // A Place at the Table + A Giveaway

There are a number of parallels which can be drawn between the fight to obtain rights for African American’s during the Civil Rights Movement and the current struggle for the right to marry in the Gay and Lesbian community.  In Susan Rebecca White’s book A Place at the Table: A Novel these parallels are brought to the surface.  Based in the heart of Georgia as well as the heart of New York City during the ‘70s and ‘80s this book tells the story of three separate people fighting to find their identify while shadowed by the burden of being unable to change who they are at heart.

This story shines a lot on all of the lies we tell ourselves over time to feel accepted in society and shows just how strong a person can be when the decide to stand up for who they are and what they want.  At the center of it all is the story of an unconventional family brought together by the love of southern cooking and the pain of being alienated by their actual families.

A Place at the Table combines the comfort of southern cooking with the trendsetting ways of a New York City cafĂ© to show that no matter how different we are; once seated at the same table we can all find things in common.  Susan Rebecca White’s story plays on the underlying fears we all share inside, what if I’m not good enough?  How am I going to survive?  Does anyone really know me? Can I really be myself in front of the rest of the world?

Color Me Styled - Thanksgiving Styles + Giveaway Winner

Congratulations to Melaney Ann!! You are the lucky lady taking home the hand painted wine glasses and set of wine glass tags!

As I've gotten older I've learned that families celebrate Thanksgiving in many ways!  At first you'd think there's not much that could be done differently.  Everyone has turkey, stuffing, and potatoes but there are plenty of elements that vary!  The Macy's Parade, football, board games, naps, and Turkey Trots are just a few of the options.

Color Me Styled - #ThinkPink Giveaway!

Raise awareness and win!

400 Pink Umbrellas in the sky in Sofia, Bulgaria to raise awareness for breast cancer.

October is coming to a close but before the focus is all on Halloween and candy I wanted to do a Think Pink Breast Cancer Awareness Month post.

By now, we all know how important it is to check ourselves and after the age of 40 get mammograms on a regular basis (earlier if there is a family history). But each year when October rolls around I am drawn to the multitude of pink products and events held to raise funding for breast cancer research.

The fact is, the rates haven't changed much in the last 10 years; 1 in 8 women will develop breast cancer in her lifetime. The fatalities have decreased but it is a real risk for many of us. It is up to us to live healthy lifestyles and support our sisters with cancer every way we can.

In honor of the many products available for purchase that also support the cause I am giving away a Philosophy LOVE travel set. You can win these 3 LOVE travel size bottles and they come in a pink ribbon adorned case.

You can enter to win by "Liking" this post on the Color Me Styled Facebook page, you're entered 3 times if you Like and Share the photo on your wall or timeline. Not on Facebook? That's fine. Each comment on this post is good for one entry. Shy? That's fine too. Pin this to Pinterest and tag @Color Me Styled and the hashtag #thinkpink in the comments and you get an entry. But that's not all! Tweet this and include @ColorMe_Styled and the hashtag #thinkpink for one more chance to win.

So, you could get up to 6 entries by Liking, Sharing, Pinning and Tweeting to raise Breast Cancer Awareness.

The contest is open through next Tuesday 10/30 and I'll announce the winner on Wednesday 10/31.

But remember, the point of this is to spread breast cancer awareness, even if you don't win the travel set, know that you've helped to spread the message of early detection and have demonstrated your support for Cancer patients everywhere.
